You don’t need to monitor this yourself.

Measures Taken follows unusual situations that might matter, checks local sources and institutional behavior, and tells you when the evidence changes what you should do — or when the whole thing turns out to be nothing.

Vigilance you can delegate

Measures Taken follows a small number of unresolved situations that could turn out to matter: an unusual disease case, an industrial accident, a government suddenly behaving differently. We stay on each one until it resolves.

The idea is delegated vigilance. You shouldn't have to refresh feeds about a plague case in Siberia. We do that, check local and original-language reporting, and email you when the evidence changes what you should do, or when the file closes.

A Watch follows the whole story

Each situation gets a Watch: a public page with one question, a level, what would make us more or less worried, and every claim we rely on, traced to where it first appeared.

Most Watches will close with nothing for you to do. That is the job working, and we'll say so plainly. We don't post to fill a calendar, and we don't send email to keep you anxious.

Watch what they do. Check what they say.

We pay the most attention to what institutions do. A hospital that stops admitting patients has told you more than its press release. Statements go in the record as claims. When the statement and the behavior disagree, that gap is usually the story. Behavior alone does not establish a diagnosis or a hidden motive.
